Sunday:

People having a scrap over a shrine in Jerusalem; that could never happen!

All hail the Prince of Peace!

Forget 24 hour pubs and cheap booze - it's 24 hour churches and cheap prayer books we need to ban to get this violence of our streets.

Won't somebody think of the atheists!

Of course you should laugh! I certainly do, and so do most of the Christians I know. The Holy Sepulchre is notorious for this kind of thing. I think it's something in the air in Jerusalem, a sort of mass hysteria produced by thousands of years of passionate religious intensity concentrated on one small place. Before I visited it myself, I thought that the contradictions between the various sects (even the Sepulchre has its rival in the Garden Tomb) would make the atmosphere less affecting, but actually it just seems to heighten it. There's something addictive about it.
